“En mi país, las separaciones son finísimas y casi inexistentes, como en nuestra arquitectura. Para nosotros, como sucede en el concepto de belleza oriental, es muy importante destacar en un edificio el placer de los detalles simples. En eso, cualquier hábito cotidiano influye. Por ejemplo, la forma de comer es mucho más suave en Japón: los pasteles de Occidente tienen un sabor extremadamente dulce, las sopas son muy cremosas, mientras que, en Japón, un caldo es un poco de agua con algo sencillo y la textura es casi transparente. O la ropa, mientras en Japón el quimono, o incluso las colecciones de diseñadores contemporáneos, son creaciones casi rectas para esconder el cuerpo, en Europa se diseña la ropa muy ceñida, dejando ver todas las formas del cuerpo. La tradición japonesa también destaca la importancia de hablar en voz baja, o incluso el uso del silencio, para comunicar cosas importantes. Todo ello se traduce en una estética arquitectónica aparentemente simple y transparente opuesta al ruido tecnológico. Y, sin embargo, utilizamos la tecnologia más puntera. Pero no es nunca obvia.”
